Sports Day at KAG

Kolding Amtsgymnasium og HF-kursus

Friday the 9th of September KAG, Kolding Amts Gymnasium, held their annual sports day where the students were active all day. The students had received a paper with information about the day. This time it was special because it was a new concept.

The day started in the school cafeteria with a warm-up, and now the day could begin.

In the school area there were four bases which each contained different activities. In the first base the students could choose between football, basketball, ultimate and bowling. In the second base there were volley, hockey, memory game and Viking game. The third base consisted of tableau, old games and cheerleading. A tableau is where a group of people dress up to look like a painting or a picture. (photo below)

Fourth base contained orienteering, tug-of-war, baton and obstacle race in pairs. Tug-of-war is what the photo above shows.

Each class formed a team which fought against the other teams from their year group. They should gather as many points as possible, each time the team won an activity, they got three points and if it ended up in a draw, the two teams got one point each. When the activities were over, all the students gathered in the school cafeteria to watch the winners of cheerleading from each year group do their cheerleading. The winner was the team which received the loudest applause from the audience. Each class should come up with a theme for their costumes and at the end of the day the class with the best theme was announced.

Sports day is a tradition at many schools in Denmark, and some of the reasons for this day are to strengthen the union in the classes and to teach young students that sport can be fun!

The Annual Field day at KAG

Every year in September, The annual KAG field day is held.

Some people looked forward to the day with excitement, and others were less excited. Since I never have been that good at sports, I did not really look forward to the day.

When I showed up at my school, I only knew that I was supposed to play one kind of sports activity after the other. 4 bases were set up with 4 different themes. At each base I had chosen 1 out of 2 or 3 activities.

To make the day interesting, the teachers had come up with a “brilliant” idea: class outfits/themes. Each class had to dress up in a chosen outfit, so you could tell the classes apart. For example a Christmas outfit or cheerleading outfit.

We started in the cafeteria, and were afterwards asked to go to different areas at our school.

At first I had to play basket. My class and I had to play against our long time rivals, one of the other 2nd year classes. It didn’t take long before the team spirit got its claws into us. We were not a very athletic team (we looked like a bunch of clowns), but we gave 100 % of ourselves, and I too got entirely caught up in it. The best team always wins, so WE won. From that point we just ruled the school doing cooperation and cheering, and actually had fun!

Although we didn’t win the 1st price (a big dinner and a cup), a lot of us look forward to the next field day, including myself.

My favourite sport

Basketball has had my attention for many years. At the moment I am playing at a local club in Kolding and enjoying it very much. We are practicing every Monday, and every weekend we have a match against another team in various parts of the country. Many of my team mates are good friends of mine, which only doubles the fun.

In school we are at the moment working on putting a team together for at championship among Danish gymnasiums. We practice once a week and it is a great way to get to know some of the other students at the school. You quickly slot together with the rest of your team mates and it is a great way to extend your circle of friends through them.

Besides all the friends related advantages basket is a hard physical sport which puts you in peek condition. In a game you are constantly moving around and never standing still which makes it very hard. It is therefore critical that you’re able to concentrate and take accurate aim even though your pulse is very high. Besides shooting accurately it is important for a team during a game to stay focused, and work together as a team even though you are behind.

Basketball is a fun game for everybody. You should try it out at you local sports club.

Johanne: This is me

Hello my name is Johanne and I’m 17 years old. I live in Kolding, quite a big town in Jutland, Denmark. I’m an only child and live together with my mother in a house, not too far from my high school, KAG (Kolding Amtsgymnasium).

In my spare time I enjoy a lot of activities (besides homework!); I spend a lot of time hanging out with my friends (going shopping, going to the movies, talking etc.), going to the local clubs, reading, listening to music, petting my cat, going to concerts, playing squash etc.

My interests: I have taken quite a big interest in Danish politics and I have also joined DGS, which is an abbreviation of “The association of the Danish high school students” (Danske Gymnasieelevers Sammenslutning). DGS is a non-governmental organisation , whose purpose is to defend the rights of the  Danish high school students in cases involving both politicians, principals, teachers etc. Actually, I’m the vice-president in the Vejle-department.

I have also developed a great interest in music- especially a Danish band called Mew, of whom I’m a very dedicated fan. I could talk about them for hours and hours!

I also enjoy travelling very much. I like learning about different cultures.

Sports; I’ve tried quite a lot of sporting activities, here among: swimming, dancing, tennis, badminton, diving, riding, handball, softball, squash, skiing etc. But the sport which I am most fond of is skiing. Unfortunately, Denmark isn’t really suited for skiing so I only enjoy skiing in the winter holidays.

I am looking forward to getting to know all of you,

Love from Johanne

Hello I’m Mikkel.

I’m 21 years old and live in Kolding.

In Kolding, I live with two boys as a part of my work. The boys have some social problems and my job is to help them in the apartment where we live together.

In my spare time I’m a coach for a handball team for girls in the age of 12-13. I have also been national coach for the Danish YMCA national team for girls under 18. I do also play handball my self. I’m using at least 15 hours a week on playing and coaching handball.

When I’m done at the high school in Kolding, I’m going to study in a pedagogic direction.

At last I have a picture of my assistant coach Louise and I, after we had won the gold medal, at the YMCA European Championships for girls under 18.
